The Watcher

The Watcher is on display for the last weekend at Phillip's Mill 96th Annual Art Show in Mew Hope. Open 1-5 Daily.

The Watcher was a surprise for me. I tend towards sculpting animals who live in this region: fox, songbirds, squirrels, owls…Instead, I was inspired by a meerkat.

On a spring trip to Washington, DC, I visited the National Zoo. I learned about the meerkats who live there and one female who spent most of her time watching for any danger her tribe might encounter.

I admired her vigilance and care for her community. I connected with her need to protect the young ones. So the next time I had some clay in my hands, I started this sculpture. I am so glad she came to be. She watches, warns and protects.
