7.5" x 5" x 1.5"
When I started doing raku firing, just last year, I became a little obsessed. After playing with a small variety of raku glazes, I realized I had found the perfect finish for beetles. I had made a few bugs from ceramic before trying raku, but I hadn't found the right surface. Beetles have incredibly colorful shells and I wanted to mimic that in the work I made.
With raku, the finish is not a certainty. The flames that lick the sculpture ensure variation. I love allowing the process to do its’ work and always being surprised by the result. Raku is a living surface. It can keep changing after time and exposure to sunlight.
