6" x 4.5" x 1"
I started collecting butterflies and bugs 27 years ago. It all started with a thoughtful gift of a beautiful mounted butterfly. I was fascinated with the metamorphosis of butterflies and the idea of changing into something beautiful. I have always loved the idea of renewal or rebirth. I still love looking at my mounted butterflies. Recently, I found a collection of beetles at an antique shop and couldn't resist it. In nature, I find unending inspiration. I can imagine these bugs all together behind glass, in a collection.
This bug sculpture is Raku fired. It is a wild process involving fire and smoke. The work comes out just as wild as the process! It is a living finish that can change with time and exposure to UV light.
